Our phones have been ringing on a very regular basis today, with a range of enquiries from businesses and residents.
We are dealing with all matters immediately.
Schools closed today and the Government have also announced huge financial support is being made to so many people and services.
Teams are working flat out nationally and locally to support people, including approx 5 million new Universal credit applications being made.
Check out our dedicated website post & social media feeds which are being updated several times a day for the latest information.
Many services are now closed, and it is right to do this.
This will cause short term pain for some but it will help to stop people dying !!
Yes its as simple as that.
We are in daily contact with NCC officers, cabinet members, Councillors and other members of the NCC team
NCC website & social media feeds are very informative.
We receive daily / weekly updates from our CEO.
We can share part of today’s update below.
I aim to share with you a round up of the week’s unprecedented events.
Firstly both myself and the Leader, Councillor Jackson would like to give an extended thanks to everyone for their hard work and resilience over the last few weeks.
Without you all we would not be able to deliver our fantastic services to residents across Northumberland which is why we are all here to put our Residents First.
This week has seen a number of briefings delivered daily by the Prime Minister, the Chief Scientific Adviser, Chief Medical Officer and other Ministers of State setting out major changes to the way we respond to the serious situation of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) that we are responding to.
However, today the Prime Minister and the Chancellor made significant announcements that affect us all. Pubs, clubs and leisure centres will close tonight, and we have been advised to stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives.
In addition, other financial measures were announced to protect jobs, incomes and businesses – we will provide further information on this in our next update.
As you will be aware, the situation in Northumberland has changed significantly over the course of this week with a number of residents testing positive for Covid-19, some being hospitalised and sadly one resident has died.
We are continuing to ensure that we stay well briefed on both the evolving national and regional picture, and follow all Government and Public Health England guidance which includes protecting yourself and others. www.gov.uk/coronavirus
Please be assured that as a Council, we are well prepared to respond to this situation but we are grateful for the engagement and support of all of our staff to support our efforts across the county at this time.
Our Executive Team has met throughout the week as our Strategic Leadership Team (Gold Command) to ensure that we are doing all that we can to support our staff and residents at what is an unprecedented and difficult time.
We are now starting to plan and mobilise our critical and essential services across the Council, this includes looking at how we work differently, undertake different duties and support the critical and essential services that we and our partners provide across the County. We will provide more information on this next week when our mobilisation plans will become clearer.
Key matters of the week have been:
Regular public health guidance relating to:
Coronavirus: What you need to know
Social Distancing Measures and Vulnerable Groups
Guidance for Educational Settings (including schools)
The closure of Schools & Educational Settings
Supporting Business will be a key responsibility for the council going forward
I have written to all staff today following the government’s recently issued guidance on key workers with a clear process of what staff members need to follow.
May I take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support
What should you do ?
Please adhere to the advice that the Government and medical experts give out, this is changing as more tests are being conducted.
Please check our dedicated post on this site with links to the latest advice.
DO NOT ignore the advice as you can put yourself and many other people at risk.
There is an increasing number of people working from home or self isolating.
BT have improved the connectivity on their broadband infrastructure to assist with the extra capacity.
Already we are becoming aware of some issues with people self isolating , such as boredom & feeling low.
It would appear that many people are watching constant TV coverage & social media feeds about the virus and this is having a deep impact upon them.
We have links to support available on our website & social media.
There is a level of FAKE news on social media and some inappropriate comments, even locally.
This is very unhelpful in so many ways.
We are working closely with PTC and also several town Cllrs, and in regular contact with social housing providers, The Police, Community groups, and many more
